Tonttu — Licence Agreement
Last updated: 3 November 2026
1. About this agreement
This agreement is between you and Volodymyr Linkevych, an individual developer based in Cyprus ("I", "me"). It covers the Tonttu app for Windows, its installer, its helper service, its updates, and the web remote page it serves to the device you control it from: a phone, tablet or another computer with a browser ("the device"). The Windows computer that runs the app is "your computer". Together, the app and the page are "the software". The software is meant to let you control your computer's mouse and keyboard, and related things such as apps, files, sound and the microphone, from your device over your own network.
By installing or using the software you accept this agreement. If you don't accept it, don't install or use the software.
If you use the software for an organisation, you confirm that you may accept this agreement on its behalf.
2. Licence
The software is free. I give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use it on computers you own or are allowed to manage, for personal or work use.
The software is licensed, not sold. I keep all rights not expressly given to you, including copyright and the name and logo.
3. What you may not do
Unless the law allows it despite this agreement, you may not:
- copy, share or redistribute the software or its installer, or offer it for download anywhere except by linking to my official website (tontturemote.app) or release page;
- sell, rent, lend or sublicense the software, or include it in another product;
- use the software to provide remote control or support to other people as a paid or hosted service;
- modify the software, or decompile, disassemble or reverse engineer it;
- remove or change copyright, licence or third-party notices;
- use the software to build a competing product.
- runs with your normal user rights. A small helper service that runs with system rights passes the device's input on to windows that run as administrator (such as installers and Task Manager). The service has no network access. Windows' own permission prompts ("Do you want to allow this app to make changes?") can be answered from the device only if you turn that on in Settings, which itself asks for administrator permission;
- can move the pointer, type, press any key combination, switch and start apps, and lock, sleep, restart or shut down the computer;
- can send files to the computer and, unless you turn it off, let a paired device download files you have selected in File Explorer;
- sends paired devices what they need to work: the text around the cursor in the field you are typing in (never password fields), the names of open windows and of the app in front, and, when you ask for them on the device, the clipboard and files;
- creates a local certificate authority on your computer, which you can install on your device so the connection is encrypted and trusted. It is limited to home-network addresses and cannot be used to vouch for websites on the internet.
- which devices you pair, and removing or banning devices you no longer trust;
- keeping the pairing code and QR code private;
- the networks you use the software on (home or other trusted networks are recommended; a network Windows marks as Public may allow other people to try to connect);
- removing the certificate profile from your device if you stop using the software;
- keeping your own backups. Remote actions such as shutting down can lose unsaved work.
- a Windows Firewall rule that allows incoming connections to the app on networks Windows marks as Private or Domain. Public networks are allowed only if you turn that on;
- a Windows service ("Tonttu helper") that runs with system rights, as described above;
- an entry that starts the app when you sign in, if you choose that option;
- a local certificate authority on your computer (not installed as trusted on the computer itself; only on devices where you choose to install it).
- access, monitor or control someone else's computer without their permission;
- break the law, or the rules of a network, service or game you use;
- try to break into, overload or interfere with the software or other people's copies of it.
- liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence;
- liability for fraud, intent or gross negligence;
- any liability that cannot be limited under the law of the country where you live;
- your statutory rights as a consumer, including rights under EU and Cyprus consumer law for digital content.
Nothing here limits rights you have under EU law, including decompiling the software where that is needed for interoperability (Directive 2009/24/EC).
4. What the software does, and your responsibility
The software lets a paired device control your computer over your local network. To do that it:
Anyone holding a paired device can control your computer while the app runs. You are responsible for:
Not for high-security systems. The software is not designed or tested for computers where security is critical, such as systems that handle regulated or highly sensitive data, or that control medical, industrial, financial or safety-critical equipment. Don't use it on them.
Work computers. On a computer managed by an employer or another organisation, use the software only if its IT administrator allows it. It installs a system service and accepts connections from the local network.
What installing changes. Installing the software adds:
Uninstalling removes the firewall rule, the service and the start-up entry. Consider these changes before installing the software on a computer that holds sensitive information.
5. Acceptable use
Use the software only on computers you own or have permission to control. Don't use it to:
Some games and online services detect simulated input. They may ignore it or treat it as cheating. Using the software with them is at your own risk.
6. Updates and beta
The software checks for updates. By default it downloads and installs them automatically when no device has been connected for a while; the helper service does the installing, so there is no permission prompt. Updates are only installed if they carry my signature. You can choose "Notify me" or "Off" in Settings. With updates off you won't hear about security fixes.
Updates may add, change or remove features. This agreement also applies to updates, unless an update comes with different terms.
The software is currently a beta. Beta versions are expected to contain bugs, and their main purpose is to find and fix them. Keep backups of important data and don't rely on the software working correctly. I can't promise that any particular bug will be fixed. The software may change without notice or stop being offered, and I may stop developing it at any time.
7. Third-party components
The software includes open-source components and fonts (including the Geist font under the SIL Open Font License). Their licences are listed in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md, which ships with the software. Those licences apply to those components, and nothing in this agreement limits your rights under them.
The optional microphone feature needs a virtual audio cable, such as VB-CABLE (VB-Audio), VoiceMeeter or Virtual Audio Cable. These are separate products, not part of the software; you download and install them under their makers' own licences.
8. No warranty, limits of liability, your consumer rights
The software is provided free and "as is". To the extent the law allows, I give no warranty that it is error-free, secure, uninterrupted, or fit for a particular purpose.
To the extent the law allows, I am not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, the software. This includes lost or corrupted data, lost work, lost profits, damage to equipment, and indirect or consequential loss. You use the software at your own risk.
Nothing in this agreement limits or excludes:
9. Ending the licence, changes, law, contact
Ending. You can stop using the software at any time by uninstalling it. Your licence ends automatically if you break this agreement. When it ends, uninstall the software and delete any copies.
Changes. I may update this agreement. I'll show the new version with the update that introduces it, or on the website, with its new date. If you keep using the software after that, the new version applies. If you don't agree, stop using the software.
Law. This agreement is governed by the laws of the Republic of Cyprus. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts there.
Whole agreement. This agreement and the privacy policy at tontturemote.app/privacy are the whole agreement about the software. If a part of it is found invalid, the rest still applies. If I don't enforce a part of this agreement, I can still enforce it later.
Export and sanctions. Don't use, export or provide the software in breach of export control or sanctions laws that apply to you.
Security problems. If you find a security problem in the software, please report it privately to security@tontturemote.app before sharing it publicly. I'll confirm receipt and work on a fix.
